70-400 Exam Study Notes: Section 1a - Configure Notifications
As mentioned in the introductory post, we mentioned that this series will prepare you for the exam by helping readers understand how Operations Manager 2007 works and how to use the platform effectively. Section 1a in the exam 70-400 skills measured sheet is Configure Notifications.
Here is your study guide for this section of the exam.
Overview
To successfully configure notification in Operations Manager 2007, remember the following key points:
There are four notification channels available:
- E-mail – Sends alerts through SMTP. You can configure redundant SMTP Servers
- Instant Message – Sends alerts through the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)
- SMS – Sends alerts through short message service (SMS), which supports the transmission of short text messages to and from mobile phones. This requires a GSM modem attached to the Root Management Server
- Command - Specifies a path to an application or script that can perform basic function, such as troubleshooting functions for a particular failure. There is a great example of how to use this channel on Walter Chomak’s blog
Alert Aging
This is Microsoft’s implementation of alert escalation in Operations Manager 2007. Each subscription configured to use alert aging sends one notification for each alert that has not been responded to in X minutes. For more information, see HERE. So for a tiered escalation strategy (one at 30 min, one at 60 min, etc), you’d need to create a subscription for escalation tier.
Configuration - Order of Operations
To configure notification in Operations Manager 2007, administrators must complete the following actions:
- Enable a notification channel.
- Create one or more Notification Recipients.
- Create one or more Notification Subscriptions.
Hands-on Tasks
Step through the following tasks as documented on the Microsoft web site. Explore the redundancy options in the various notification channels.
